This week we slammed books 1 and 2 of Shaman's Call by Sean Oswald and I really enjoyed the listen, narration performed by the excellent Daniel Wisniewski. For those familiar with the genre this is a "trapped in VRMMO" style novel where the MC finds himself "reborn" into the game world and having to figure out what the meaning of his new life is.
Sean is known for his Welcome to the Multiverse and Life in Exile series. You may recognize Daniel from the Tokens & Towers, Twelfth Cataclysm, or Battleborne series. This story get's a lot of bonus points from me, especially for a lesser known series and I really felt it pulling on the things I enjoyed when listening to Life Reset. We have a non-human character MC, no romance, some interesting side characters, and a MC who is willing to break the game to become OP. The AI has decided it's Frank's job to make the ogre faction "entertaining" for the players or suffer a variety of unpleasant punishments. Not one to take this kind of abuse laying down Frank fights back against the AI anyway possible and seeks to re-engage with human society as much as he can. Unfortunately for Frank the AI is onto him and is already ramping up the difficulty, and punishments, to make up for his shenanigans. There are a few twists and turns and by book 2 the author is already upping the ante a bit on our MC and I start to get some Feedback Loop vibes. Looking forward to this series resuming and uncovering the mysteries of the alternate realities Frank has begun to uncover.
