The Feedback Loop by Harmon Cooper is one of those books that will have you talking different and calling everyone "Doll Face", I bet you didn't know that you needed a Noir style fantasy novel in your life! I feel like I even imagined it in black and white while I listened along. Oh, and did I mentioned its narrated by Jeff Hays and Soundbooth Theater? Lastly, the series has been combined into two omnibus, there's really no excuse not to check it out.
Quantum has been trapped in his personal VR world for nearly 2 years and has begun to lose all sense of himself. He wakes up every day fights "Morning Assassin" and then blasts his way through a bunch of goons all before grabbing breakfast with his favorite waiter and love interest Dolly. Then, one morning, his world comes crashing down and he is rescued... but does he want to be rescued? Why are people trying to kill him? What about the "people" he has come to call his friends?!
This story is a high speed romp with a smattering of excellent supporting characters. There is some crossover with the real world, and both the game and the fantasy aspects are solid. You have some enemies to friends, a weird love triangle, and man I do love me some Morning Assassin and the boys. Who doesn't love some soccer hooligan thugs thrown into a fantasy world?!
There's just enough intrigue and seriousness to keep you turning the pages or listening to find out what's going on in the bigger picture. If you are into a more classic litrpg/tower climbing style novel I highly recommend his Tokens & Towers series which is criminally underrated.
